You already know what it is; the thing you said you would start on the 1st of this year. But here you are, days away from October.

October 1 is Thursday. That habit has a name in your head already. You are waiting for January 1st to make it official.

October Theory is your permission to start now instead of waiting for January 1st. There's nothing special about January 1st. Think how far ahead you could be by New Year if you started this week.

Start the thing you have already named

Not twelve goals. The one you keep describing to yourself. Start it on October 1. Plan only the next two weeks. A plan for the whole winter is how you talk yourself out of Tuesday. When those two weeks are done, plan the next two. Same time, on the days you picked. By January you have already been doing it for three months.

Write the version you will still do in December

This week you will want six workouts, or a page count you only hit when you feel fired up. That is the hopeful version. On a dark Tuesday in December, after work, you will not do it. Write the December version now. Three sessions, not six. Twenty minutes, not the whole evening. If the plan only works when you feel motivated, you will drop it the first tired week and hand the habit back to January.

People love to quote 66 days for a new habit. That number is a median from one study, and plenty of people took far longer. Sixty-six days from October 1 is early December, still before the holidays. Start now and those tired weeks are reps you already have. Wait for January and you meet the same weeks with none.

Ask one friend to look, or you will move the date

You have swiped the reminder. You have closed the journal. Both let you decide, alone, that October did not count. Ask one friend to look at the same record you do, on a day you both pick. A missed week is then a Friday conversation, not a private reason to start over.

People nicknamed the second Friday of January Quitter's Day. In 2027 that Friday is January 8. If you have been doing the habit since October 1, that Friday is a later week of the same effort. If you waited, it is day one. You already know which one you usually get.

A Friday check is how October 1 stays the start date

In Motivus, invite one friend onto the habit with you, from October 1 into the first weeks of January. On Friday they look at the same record you do. They can check how the week went and cheer you on. No nagging required. That is how you keep October 1 as the start date, instead of writing a new one in January.
